Other notes and stuff
1. We have no daft artist demands other than a
decent place to sleep (preferably with a some
privacy – and no animals (although sheep
considered BAAH)).
2. All we ask is that you honour what you have
written in the contract and discussed with
RUFMOUTH.
3. We have always given 100% - 200% at every show
and love rocking parties and we also understand
the great risk promoters face putting events on,
so we do try and help & become involved with the
event, rather than just doing it and then sodding
off.
4. RUFMOUTH particular likes working regularly
with people and is currently looking for promoter
partners who want to put regular RUF BEATS nights
on and return hip hop and music to it’s original
spirit of “peace, unity, love and having fun”.

| RUF BEATS SUPERHERO
NUMBER 1 :: Dave The Rufmouth |
Everything Ruf related comes from one
man, one vision, with one set of trousers that by now
are starting to walk by themselves… he is the one and
only (no not Chesney Hawks)…
RUFMOUTH aka Dave THE RUF Davies, whom has recorded
over 30 releases including 11 albums as JEEP BEAT
COLLECTIVE
(his unique scratch/ cut n paste outfit) and 3 more
albums and shit loads of 12” etc as MINDBOMB (his
funky outspoken vocal outfit)
As heard on the following labels/releases :
RUF BEATS,
NINJA TUNE,
ATHLETICO,
US BOMB HIP HOP (with both his triple album JEEP BEAT
anthology + Return of the Dj, Revenge of the B Boy and
Bomb Worldwide),
BEATS BY DOPE DEMAND, BOLSHI, DUST 2 DUST, JOURNEYS BY
DJ’s, ANDY SMITH’s The Document and loads more stuff
RUFMOUTH sell yourself in one line: I am a bastard son
of Bambaataa, Chuck D and Bill Hicks raised with my
3rd eye open and fuelled by the funky, punky energy of
pure freedom and I demand “peace, love and Unity” now
Right Now… I solemnly promise to rock your peoples
tits off even if they don’t have any.
How much does he charge? Makes him sound like a
prostitue but hey aren’t we all…CALL FOR INFO AS
DEPENDS ON SHOW LOCATION etc we’re reasonable folk as
well. If we wrere hip hop prima donna’s we’d have done
2 albums sucked the devil’s cock and fucked off.
How long can he play for? Dj sets up to 6 hours, but
normly about 3 hours, for live/vocal sets only he
tends to do around an hour to an hour and a half.
What equipment does he need? Er 2 x Tehnics, likes to
bring his own mixer when he can + other gear (DAT,
SNYTHS etc) as needed. Essentially with over 11 years
of releases he can just rock it in the traditional 2 x
deck / 1 mic old skool DJ style.
What he’s like: The never sleeping bosscat of Ruf
Beats is the main man, producer, mc & dj of the labels
two most successful crews JEEP BEAT COLLECTIVE(the
undisputed well on vinyl anyway… Kings of Cut N Paste)
and MINDBOMB (various releases inc the infamous
“Westwood is a Twat!!”) there is no one quite like
RUFMOUTH in British Hip Hop history.
His fearless and unstoppable attitude since 1993 have
made his label one of the most respected in the UK and
its undisputed title of longest running British Hip
Hop imprint looks set to run and run, especially now
that he has thrown away industry conventions and
methods and now playing the game by his own ruf rules.
Live and as a DJ RUFMOUTH has a great flowing dj style
cutting up in a raw, exciting, visual method (never
the shoe gazing turntablist) a mad blend of hip hop
classics & fine new tracks with the original funk,
some breaks & beats + whatever he can get away with,
topped off with lots his own mc’ing and a huge big
chunk of humour. With his own vast back catalogue he
constantly brings old MINDBOMB and new RUFMOUTH tunes
up to date using exciting NEW hip hop instrumentals,
amidst classic rebooted for the current day… he also
has the abilities to mix a huge sploge of fantastic
explosive JEEP BEAT with his rare, exclusive and
unrivalled hip hop classics including his legendary
British hip hop selection’s which eventually helped
lead to the acceptance of proper accents and identity
for later artsists.
He throws down bad ass breaks and funk for B Boys and
gorls and just funky dancers alike before flipping
into classic anthems from Pop to rock to comedy themes
to the odd inspirational house classic, upwards to
banging breakbeat, funky drum n bass / hip hop hybrids
before bringing it all back to hip hop and the funk….
Although he often is asked to specialise in one
musical area he prefers to be free but has dropped
many hip hop only, or breakbeat only type sets but
prefers the hip hop based eclectic approach, along
with a good dose of personalised vocalised madness. On
the MC tip he has a clear strong vocal style, infused
with humour and with a heavyweight reality check for
the masses. After all if you ain’t got something to
say… shut the fuck up! As a DJ he rocks it as his
”Ruffest DJ in the world” mix Cd shows but the extra
mike dimension and subject matter of his many vocal
tracks help take the show to another dimension
wherever the party. He is also currently working on
using VJ’s to make his show a staggering mixture of
edutainment whilst people party their asses off and to
unleash his 2 years of in depth research on “life, the
universe and everything”!
What the press say:
GROOVE mag GERMANY “The Iggy Pop of live hip hop
dj’ing / mc’ing”,
MELODY MAKER “A national treasure”,
US SPIN “One of the 13 best dj’s in the world”
CITY LIFE Untouchable dancefloor delight”
DJ “lost none of his wayward wickedness. Essential”
His famous fans include: (not that this means shit –
we just wanted to bragg a bit for once)!
Afrika Bambaataa (plays his stuff – especially JEEP
BEAT COLLECTIVE) Jazzy Jay (Bam’s pint sized sidekick
DJ and old skool producer extraordinaire) Chuck D
(Dave had sent him every Ruf Beats release for years
before finally meeting him in 1998 when Chuck said “so
you’re the MINDBOMB cat!” –Dave says if he’d died
atthat moment he would have been a happy cat, indeed,
but instead went across town to check Mantronix and
find out that MC Tee in now working ina carpet shop!)
John Peel (who has played various RUF tunes over the
year – we even got a Xmas card once. FAME!) Anthony
Wilson (ex Factory and current In The City Festival
boss who described Dave as the best hip hop/punk/funk
dj around TO HIS PARENTS) Andy Smith (PORTISHEAD’s dj
innovator), there are probably more but you get the
idea.. interesting folk seem to like us, even though
we’re so fucking UNDERGROUND sometimes we can’t shovel
ourselves out! Hah ah aha
Mix album available on request:
Dave THE RUF “The ruffest dj in the world” which got
5/5 in BREAKING POINT “ Breath of fresh air to the mix
compilation standing out from the rest” 4/5 in HHC “70
minutes of non stop audio mayhem”.
We feel this album is a great mix of what he can do
live, although recently he has been bringing a more
direct vocal delivery with cutting messages of truth
into the mix, as well as looking to work to visualise
his music and messages. His other mix albums include
the more political “No Historical backspin” which
includes some of his writings on the 9/11 conspiracy
and the people who rules us… There is also an old
skool / nu skool / big beat recent mix from Nov 2003
called “Illektro” named after the Manchester freakout
club night based upon tough Electro.
RUFMOUTH - Favourite DJ sets & live shows
• 26/2/2004 – RUFMOUTH self promotes a “Tribute to
Bill Hicks” (the legendary comedian) and crams 180
into the Zumbar for the 10th Anniversary of the
visionaries’ death and plays audio bombs from Bill’s
rock heroes and other comic greats. The dedicated fans
watch rare Bill footage all night long and RUFMOUTH’s
works his arse off to keep the heads happy as ever
with a follow up gig fo rthe 100 who couldn’t get it!
• Bristol show – Arc bar Sept 2003 – a great throwdown
2 hour set with huge audio bombs for 90 min before
RUFMOUTH launched into a great ½ full on verbal throw
down taking in a best of his vocal work including
great crwod reactions for new tracks like “Write about
today” and “The good die young” whilst classics like
“Westwood is a twat” gets dropped over TIM DOG’s Fuck
Compton and “Hazardous Journey” over J5’s Concrete
Schoolyard – bliss. Really sweaty scenes end with the
bouncer from outside rocking his tits off and
proclaiming Rufmouth the King Of Rock. Rufmouth loves
Bristol!
• Mark B & Blade show – Dave’s fully live JBC set up
rocks it supporting the Top 40 troubling act, who
turned up late after recording the Feeder mix of their
last single for Top Of the pops - then rushing up to
MCR in the tour van. RUF and co laid down a killer
set, prompting a comment “what kind of music is this”
and someone else christening RUF the messiah of punk
hop… hhmmm Regardless the gig was ripped… we were
pulled off far too early by a promoter who wanted to
big himself up by Dj’ing before Blade but ended up
losing the crowd’s interest ( as they were late)
before excitement ensued when 50 scallies Bum rushed
the show and the Bar. Another typical night in MCR.
• Waterfront NORWICH, Def Tex mc & promoter Chrome
puts on a massive UK bill supporting CASH MONEY with
JEEP BEAT / MINDBOMB head of the bill with the 5 piece
band that proceeds to wreck it with Ruf tackling an
anti BLADE/FEEDER “serious hip hop head” with some
home truths. Great night ends with Ruf & a very happy
K Delight rescued from sleeping in the car by Jack at
Faze Two dj agency and being treated to late night
goodies from CASH MONEY who is well into Mr Kiplings
cakes !!!
• Big Days Out festival ULM, GERMANY 01 Crazy one man
hip hop show in daytime in pissing down rain,
Our superhero brings a little bit of Ruf sunshine to
the mud & seriousness of German hip hop, and jells
well with the mad noise hip hop of DIALEK, the US’s
hardest hip hop secret.
• Dry Bar MANCHESTER 01 Dave brings a 5 piece band inc
K DELIGHT to warm up for MARK B & BLADE, a mad gig
where the outstanding comment from one mind blown
member of the audience is “What the fuck was that all
about”. Loads of new stuff gets dropped and Blade and
crew turn up eventually after recording for Top of the
Pops. It’s a strange life
• Dave THE RUF “One man hip hop army” European Tour
01.Too many brilliant experiences on this one to go
into, wild long 3-6 hour shows from everywhere to
cheesy bars, hooker hang outs, huts in the middle of
nowhere and even an old warship. Dave’s favourite was
the gig playing after a romantic book reading by one
of Germany’s leading authors in a theatre.
• Style Wars MANCHESTER 99 Ruf’s Hip Hop night warming
the place up nicely before Andy Smith, followed by a
dash down to Keele university to play end of term
party and watch the sun come up. Ahh
• Turntablism event @ IMPAKT FESTIVAL Utrecht HOLLAND
99. After an opening day lecture from Dave THE RUF ,
he proceeds to play with 4 of the world’s most bizarre
dj’s in terms of innovative turntable use, despite
this he is the only one to rock the club, and ends up
playing the 3,000 capacity closing party complete with
bizarre “falling cute animals” slide show and
inflatable furniture.
• Irish jazz festival - CORK, EIRE 98 - With TEMPER
creating a live graff masterpiece the Ruf busts a one
man hip hop show on the massive stage of the Opera
House, 2000 people party whilst he drops exclusive new
MINDBOMB jams “Ruf Beats” and a very raw “Seducer”
demo complete with the Fast Shows “Suit you sir” chant
and helicopter beatboxing… the show ends on an
explosion as TEMPER finishes the final sweep of his
live graff masterpiece, finishing the apt mushroom
cloud. Ruf then escapes into the crowd, after an
emotional crowd response, only to drag a crowd of them
backstage to enjoy the more than ample Guinness rider
• The Funnel – DUBLIN 98. With graff man TEMPER our
heroes proceed to wreck a set of pure eclectic madness
with the local DJ running off with headphones &
cartridge. Dave carries on regardless on one deck,
whilst TEMPER gets everyone very high off the fumes.
Previous had seen the two mixing with some very nice
Guiness models, and strange penis shaped statues
outside Dublin’s art gallery!
• First light - MACCLESFIELD 98 - Whipping the crowd
up over various gigs before the Jungle Brothers, De La
Soul, Andy Smith & Freddy fresh. Cheers Jack lad,
happy times.
• The Maffia club - ITALY 97 - The Ruf drops a mix of
pure British influences in the sweaty home of the
Italian beats scene broadcast live on their Radio 1
“what kind of music is this … Chemical Beats??” says
one enthusiastic punter.“Nah mate its fuckin British
hip hop mate” says Dave THE RUF spinning a GUNSHOT
classic into TIMEZONES World Destruction and
ultimately “SEX PISTOLS “Anarchy in the UK”. After the
set Dave gets interviewed from the club with an
interpreter, who specially rushed in after hearing the
set, who relays a live link to Rome where Dave gets
one of the most bizarre interviews of his career –
even answering Derek B questions with flair. Curiously
Derek B called him up a year a later after seeing one
of his records in Ruf’s monthly mail order list for
£1.00
• Athletico - THE END, LONDON 97 - the Ruf ends one
his most hyper sets pogo’ing with Mrs Ruf to the “MC
Mello gone crazy” as Cut Master Swift looks confused.
• US BOMB European tour 98 with Dave standing in for
DJ CRAZE who had just lifted DMC crown, alongside BOMB
husband & wife dj team DJ FAUST & SHORTEE - SWITZ /
GERMANY / BELGUIM 98 - playing with DJ NOISE &
SUPERNATURAL amongst others. Ruf ends up as acting
tour manager, many perils and adventures are faced,
only one train is missed.
Knowledge of self - CONCORDE, BRIGHTON 97 playing back
the live chant of “Westwood is a twat” that Ruf
recorded via tape from a previous Brighton gig at the
Loft that ended in water fights.
• UK FRESH 97 – Dave THE RUF hosts the Sunday UK Hip
Hop session introducing his favourite UK acts inc
NUMSKULLZ, UNDIVIDED ATTENTION (inc PARLOUR TALK) and
FIRST DOWN, an excellent high powered MINDBOMB set
with old mc, LOZ jumping on speakers, crowd Westwood
jokes and all kinds of fun is brought to a great
conclusion by allegedly BLADE’s last show.
• Glasgow Arts Centre 94 – The first ever Ruf gig with
DOYEN DOY, the two dropping their debut offerings and
getting some heat from protestants after “Fuck the
Queen” Doy expertly talks down the fools with careful
Barnsley disses whilst Dave’s raw dj’ing set from on
top of a precarious swaying scaffold, results in now
Breaking Bread man Steg G hanging off the scaffold
shouting “Ya DJ’s fine Davey”. |

| RUF BEATS SUPERHERO
NUMBER 2 :: K DELIGHT |
A staggeringly raw, British DJ who
defies the boring turntablist mould to rock cold
classics to the max whether they be funk breaks or hip
hop and drop a whole mess of audio gems into a cool,
hardcore hip hop mix for pure dancefloor action.
He has supported many US hip hop acts up in his native
North East stomping ground and become a highly rated
solo act in Japan for his floor friendly hip hop bombs
that take in cool instrumentals (a bit like DJ Shadow
but without the oh so serious and over trendy tag) and
ultra fucked up cut n paste jams..
K Delight often does shows with RUFMOUTH and indeed
the 2 come from a similar background of beats, rhymes
and lives, having both made their names in their local
area providing hot mixtapes for the streets but the
real hook up came in 1998 when RUF asked him to
contribute to his JEEP BEAT COLLECTIVE set “For Jimi
Hendrix” to which KD responded with typical panache by
tearing it up on each track. This led to his freaky
remix of JBC’s “Devestating Beat Creator” which
appeared on the JBC “Thermonuclear Soundwars” EP and
then to more hook ups on JBC’s “Death Race 2001” album
and eventually up to the JBC 6th album “Return to the
classics” to which he gave a deckwrecking 10 minute
megamix of his favourite Ruf Beats to date to dizzying
effect.
As one of the best, proper mixtape kings of the UK
dropping from concept ideas to straight up live
display of his skills KD knocks the spots of today’s
dial a freestyle, rob an exclusive mixtape fakers.
Since 1998 he has dropped 2 classic scratch n sniff
12” EP’s which both sold over 2,000 and became hotly
used tracks on the crazy Japanese DJ mixtape scene
even getting used (illegally but what the f…) by DMC
in Japan. Add to this his acclaimed full length mix
CD’s “Waxamillion” and the recent funk and hip hop
saturated mash up “Headfucking Breaks – the Wonder
Years” – which both got huge props from HHC’s Dj page
expert DJ Yoda and you have a seriously twitchy solo
artist.
The Darlington born Dj recently completed 9 months in
Australia where he was welcomed into their hip hop
scene with gigs all over the place many gigs to help
him build up a CV recently which takes in shows with
Blade, Q Bert, Cold Crush Brothers, Souls Of Mischief
and Cash Money.
He is currently working hard on his debut album,
teaching kids how to mix and scratch and preparing for
a move down to Brighton.
His RUF039CD is available for any promoter truly
interested in booking this hardcore and well proven
Warrior of Hip Hop!
